Hey Reader,

Do you know the feeling when your drink just needs *something else,* but you can’t put your finger on it?

There’s one thing that can instantly upgrade your favorite sip, whether it’s a cocktail or a mocktail.

Many bartenders add this one little thing to drinks that adds complexity, making you feel you can’t get that flavor anywhere else.

But here’s a secret: You replicate this at home! You’ve probably heard of it, maybe you even have a bottle…

the bitters truth

Made with herbs, roots and spices, bitters are the grandchild of the herbal tinctures and medicinal tonics of yore.

Add a few drops or a dash on top of your drink for extra flavor and fragrance.

Your nose is near the top of the drink, so getting a whiff of bitters as you sip enhances your experience even more.

Try my favorites right here. 👇

one thing to keep in mind

Bitters do contain alcohol — and if you only add a few drops, there’d be trace amounts in your drink.

So if you are seeking a totally sober-friendly choice for Dry January, you need non-alcoholic bitters.

Non-alcoholic bitters are a great way to take your zero-proof drinks up a notch, and you can use them in cocktails too, of course!

non-alcoholic bitters

Did you know most cocktail bitters contain trace amounts of alcohol? If that's a concern for you, consider non-alcoholic bitters like these from All the Bitter. (I'm an affiliate — use code fwbitters for 10% off!)

Bitters are such a fun drink upgrade, and if you’re anything like me you’ll soon have quite a collection! My faves are fig & walnut, coffee & cherry and lavender chamomile.

But if you want to start with the basics, grab aromatic bitters or orange cardamom.

Hope this dash of wisdom brightens your bar and beverages from now on.

Cheers,
Susannah

P.S.
How much is in a dash? About 10 drops or so.
