drinks that are light, bright and just right 🌟

easy, elegant entertaining

Hey, Reader!

After weeks of heavy holiday fare, I'm more than ready for a reset. With a new month (and a new year) kicking off, it feels like the perfect time to lighten things up in the drinks department.

I’ve been enjoying a more intentional approach to drinks this week. Not in a strict way, just choosing things that feel good and fit the moment.

That can look like:

  • Savory, spirit-forward classics that don’t rely on sweetness
  • Low-sugar, refreshing staples that don't have added sweeteneers
  • Drinks that are easy to make booze-free when you want a break from booze

These are all options that still feel thoughtful and satisfying, without a lot of overthinking.

The other great thing is that they come together with just a few ingredients, which feels especially welcome as the year gets started. Let’s get mixing!

classic martini

As a drink that never goes out of style, the classic martini combines gin, dry vermouth and orange bitters for a hint of herbs and citrus in each sip. Once you have the recipe down, there are plenty of variations to explore, like the dirty martini.

With just a few ingredients and a dry, restrained profile, it’s a great example of a cocktail that feels refined without being heavy.

virgin moscow mule

Ginger beer and lime pack a flavorful punch in this mocktail. It's perfect for those participating in Dry January or anyone who wants to skip the booze. My homemade ginger ale is my favorite addition because you can tailor the sweetness.

vodka soda

It doesn't get much easier than a two-ingredient drink — except when the recipe is also the name of the cocktail! The correct proportions are what make this simple sipper the best each time you mix it. It’s refreshing without being sweet, which makes it an easy go-to this time of year.

old-fashioned mocktail

Spirit-forward and bold, the old-fashioned is always a favorite, and for good reason. But there are a lot of ways to make it lighter. You can keep the strong and sophisticated flavors with a low-ABV version or take it entirely booze-free with a zero-proof spirit.

gin & tonic

The G&T is another favorite that's also a two-ingredient drink (although a spritz of lime takes it over the top). The right ratios and quality ingredients are key to nailing this recipe. Between the botanicals in the gin and the bitterness of tonic, this one delivers plenty of flavor while still feeling bright and refreshing.

One small habit I’ve been leaning on lately is alternating. Sometimes that means swapping in a non-alcoholic version, other times it’s just choosing something lighter between cocktails. It’s an easy way to enjoy the ritual without feeling like you’re all-in or all-out.

I hope your year is off to a great start. Cheers!

P.S. If you’re craving a little more structure as you ease into January, I’ve opened something new called the Freewild Spirits Club. It’s totally optional and designed to make the month feel easier and more enjoyable — for less than $1 a day, with no subscription required.

P.P.S. There’s also a free option called the Month of Mocktails if you’re simply looking to take a break or mix things up. Click that link to be added.
