Hey, Reader!
One drink you're almost sure to see on a cocktail menu? An old-fashioned. Whiskey, simple syrup, orange zest, cherry and bitters come together to create this iconic boozy beverage (my favorite part is probably the cocktail cherry.)
Despite the name, this classic drink is anything but old news. It's a fun one to experiment with, whether you switch up the booze, test different bitters or incorporate the flavors of the season.
Here's what I've been playing around with for fall (but they're tasty year-round too) that you should definitely try out:
smoked old-fashioned
The old-fashioned cocktail is one of the best cocktails you can make in a smoked version. Strong whiskey lends itself well to the flavor of smoke, an extra layer of complexity for an already flavorful cocktail. Plus, a cocktail smoking kit with a butane torch makes a great gift for cocktail lovers!
brandy old-fashioned
For those that may want something other than whiskey, the brandy old-fashioned is a sweeter alternative. It's easy for beginner bartenders to master and has enough flexibility that you can craft the drink of your dreams.
s'mores old-fashioned
If you're looking to cozy up as the weather cools, this nostalgic sipper is a perfect option, with flavors of graham crackers (thanks to graham cracker-infused whiskey!), chocolate and marshmallows of course!
maple old-fashioned
Maple syrup adds a delightfully sweet flavor to this whiskey sipper. Using real maple syrup and spiced bitters, this cocktail tastes like autumn in a glass. Or breakfast, depending on who you ask!
chai old-fashioned
If you normally order a chai latte at the coffee shop, then this is the nightcap of your dreams. It's the perfect blend of sweet and spicy, with plenty of flavor in every sip!
If you'll be entertaining, or just want a quick cocktail, here's my secret: old-fashioned simple syrup. Once it's made, you just need two ingredients for a drink that comes together in a snap!
I hope that one of these recipes is your new favorite this fall.
Cheers!
