Hey, Reader!
The affogato is an Italian classic that is often overlooked. A scoop of ice cream covered in rich espresso — what’s not to love?
While vanilla gelato is usually the star, you can adapt the recipe in so many ways. Mix up the espresso, the ice cream and all kinds of fun flavorings and toppings!
It's definitely a good way to enjoy the homemade ice cream you might make this summer.
keep it classic
Did you know you don't need an espresso maker to make espresso? It helps, but you can make it on the stove or in the coffee pot. Any strong coffee works! Whatever method you prefer, buy whole-bean coffee and grind it finely for the best results.
Brew your espresso with whatever method you prefer. Just before it's done, add a generous scoop of gelato to a small bowl. Pour the hot espresso over top, then grab a spoon and you're ready to enjoy!
add a twist
Who said you had to use espresso? Affogato means "drowned" in Italian, so a healthy dose of whatever you add is the only requirement!
Hot chocolate or chai tea would be tasty with vanilla gelato, or a matcha affogato would be great with strawberry ice cream. Use decaf espresso beans if you’d rather not have the caffeine but still want to enjoy a nice affogato.
make it boozy
Add a splash of liqueur, like Irish cream, coffee liqueur, Frangelico or amaretto, or even a spirit like rum or whiskey to give this dessert a little spike. You could also pour an espresso martini over top for an extra special touch!
No matter how you make it, I hope this sweetens whatever occasion you serve it for.
Cheers!
