Hey, Reader!
Let's talk Moscow Mules.
If they aren't already, these drinks need to be on your radar. Why? Well...
- They're easy to make, with the classic mule calling for just 3 ingredients.
- They're easy to customize. Prefer it a little sweeter? Need more spice? Can do!
- They're basically magic β adding a little muddled fruit or swapping the spirit transforms them into a totally new drink.
One other good reason β mules have no season. They're refreshing in the summer, spicy enough to warm you in the winter and absolutely delicious every day of the year.
Although mules typically include vodka, they are able to stand on their own as a crowd-pleasing mocktail. You can either omit the alcohol altogether (with such strong flavors, you won't miss it) or use substitute like a zero-proof agave spirit, tea, fruit juice, purΓ©e or simple syrup.
Saddle up, here are some of my most favorite mules to make into mocktails:

go virgin
With a flavor closest to the classic recipe, the Virgin Moscow Mule is ultra refreshing and simple to mix up. A zero-proof vodka replaces the traditional spirit and depending on the type of ginger beer you choose, you can end up with a sweeter or spicier drink. Lean on a bolder beer to keep the flavors close to the cocktail version.
switch your spirit
Vodka can't have all the fun! Other zero-proof spirits are another substitute that can add deeper flavors to your drink. Look to recipes that make a spirit switch already, like the pumpkin spice mule, then opt for a zero-proof alternative β homemade zero-proof whiskey is the perfect compliment to this seasonal sipper.
sweeten your sip
If you want to omit the alcohol from any recipe, simple syrup is an easy swap. With any of the fruity varieties, you can amp up the fruit flavor by leaning in with a coordinating flavored syrup. For example, in the blueberry mule, swapping the booze for blueberry syrup will boost the blueberry flavor and even more sweetness.
From here you can transform your favorite mule into a sipper to enjoy anytime.
Cheers!
