cinco drinks fit for a fiesta πŸ’ƒ

easy, elegant entertaining

Hey, Reader!

When it comes to Cinco de Mayo, it has all the makings of a perfect celebration. The weather is idyllic and one of my favorite spirits (tequila) takes a starring role.

It's not actually Mexico's Independence Day (that's Sept. 16) β€” instead, it commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862.

While it’s a minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become an observance of Mexican heritage and culture that is widely celebrated in the United States.

Whether you’re celebrating small or hosting a big fiesta, these recipes are sure to satisfy:

paloma

The Paloma, the official drink of Mexico, is made with tequila and grapefruit. Sweet, sour and a little bitter, this pretty pink cocktail is totally crushable.

margaritas

Margaritas are easy to make and even easier to enjoy. With tons of variations, you're sure to find one to fit any palate. Homemade margarita mix sets you up for success while margarita salt is the perfect finishing touch.

ranch water

Ranch water has been gaining popularity the last few years, but it's been a fave in Texas for a while. Think of it like a lighter margarita, made with tequila, lime juice and sparkling water (usually Topo Chico). It's light, bright and absolutely refreshing.

michelada

The savory brunch favorite gets a Mexican makeover thanks to the Mexican lager that acts as the booze. With just three ingredients, this simple drink is a great way to kick off the day!

mexican mule

Moscow Mule lovers, try switching out the vodka for tequila next time you make your favorite cocktail. It's usually made with vodka, but tequila brings a brightness to this cocktail and works especially well with the flavors of ginger and lime.

For any festivities that need an extra injection of fun, try paloma or margarita jello shots. These boozy shooters are so much better than the jello shots of your past, harnessing all the flavors of the classic drinks in bite-size servings. Plus, get inspired to serve more than just salsa with these Cinco de Mayo recipes.

Salud! (That's a Spanish toast meaning "to your health.")

Like many children of the 1990s, I watched lots of Captain Planet* cartoons, so now the words "reduce, reuse, recycle" are practically seared into my brain. Now that I'm a grown-up who is a cocktail content creator, I am keenly aware of how much waste I produce in the kitchen. As often as I can, I try to reduce my...
