Hey, Reader!
For the final weekend of the month, I wanted to share a drink that meets you exactly where you are. This old-fashioned–style sip is strong, sophisticated and intentionally flexible — whether you’re staying alcohol-free, easing back in or just mixing things up.
If you’ve been here a while, you know I’m all about adapting to what you have and what you like. There are three ways to make this one work for you:
1. completely zero-proof
If you want the ritual and depth of an old-fashioned without alcohol, this version leans on black tea (I use this black cask bourbon tea) paired with a zero-proof whiskey. You get layers, warmth and structure — no booze required.
2. zero-proof, simplified
No zero-proof whiskey on hand? Black tea can do more than you think. Using tea as the base still gives you body and bitterness, especially when paired with a good syrup and bitters-style flavors. You can also use black tea to make your own zero-proof whiskey at home. (Be sure to get decaf tea if that’s a concern!)
3. low-abv and balanced
If you’re easing back in, this is a great place to start. You can use old-fashioned syrup (with bitters built in) and a zero-proof whiskey, or split the base with half regular whiskey, half zero-proof spirit or tea.
You’ll get the familiar flavor of an old-fashioned, just lighter and more intentional. If you want to lighten things even more, use plain simple syrup and a dash or two of non-alcoholic aromatic bitters.
This drink isn’t about choosing the right version — it’s about choosing the one that feels good tonight. You can even change it up from one pour to the next.

non-alcoholic bitters
Did you know most cocktail bitters contain trace amounts of alcohol? If that's a concern for you, consider non-alcoholic bitters like these from All the Bitter. (I'm an affiliate — use code fwbitters for 10% off!)

P.S. However you sip this weekend — zero-proof, low-ABV or somewhere in between — you’ve already done something worth celebrating. 🧡🥃
